Phil is well known as a jazz pianist, vocalist, bandleader and educator. He studied music at the University of Natal in South Africa and later through the University of Toronto. In 1990, as Canadian Champion, Phil represented Canada in the Yamaha International Organ Festival held in Mexico City that year placing 6th in the world. His extensive professional career credits include: 1991 British Columbia Winter Games score, Festival Producer and Corporate Entertainer, Music Director of many major theatrical productions - most recently Spamalot, Mary Poppins, In the Heights, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and many more. His yearly Concert for a Summers Eve is a fundraiser for Special Needs people in the Cowichan Valley supporting Monday Morning Music. Phil is also the producer of the annual West Coast Choir Festival held at Brentwood every year. As well as being an accomplished arranger, his jazz bands, choirs, and private students achieve top honors in festivals across Canada each year including the Nationals - Music Fest Canada. As a professional musician, Phil can be found on Monday and Friday evenings playing jazz piano at the Masthead restaurant in Cow Bay, and other gigs with his jazz band "The Hot Velvet Jazz Band" at various events and venues across the island.
