Ron Killian, Piano

Ron Kilian is a highly qualified and experienced teacher/performer who is passionately committed to the well-being of his students. His teaching style promotes student self teaching (which is what practicing is) leading to self sufficiency, independence, confidence and a treasured life long hobby, perhaps even a profession. Several of Ron's students have chosen music as their careers.

All ages and levels and aspirations are welcome, from beginners to advanced and from young children to adults. Instruction is available in classical, pop and jazz styles. Students are also encouraged  to discover the joy of learning to improvise - a pleasurable and creative way of learning the workings of music language and theory.

You are invited to treat yourself to a complimentary lesson to discuss your hopes and see Ron's teaching in action.

Coaching is also available for exam preparation, music festivals/competitions and university entrance auditions.

All lessons are tailored to individual needs and aspirations of the student and are available in studio, in home and online. The studio is located in a peaceful rural setting 8 kilometres north of Duncan and is furnished with 2 mid size grand pianos.

Ron has an extensive performance background as both soloist and collaborative pianist. He has appeared with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, University of Victoria Orchestra, the award winning Aventa Ensemble, and Cowichan Consort Orchestra.  After earning both a bachelor and masters degree (BMUS, MMUS) in piano performance, Ron graduated from the Victoria Conservatory of Music's intensive 2 year teacher training program at the head of his class and was awarded an associateship, AVCM.

Ron feels privileged to have been able to teach award winning students throughout his more than 40 year career. Students have excelled in exams-including an ARCT gold medal, music festivals, university entrance auditions and concerto competitions.  In 2013, twin sisters Nio and Mirin Hirano, , at age 10, won the Cowichan Consort Orchestra's Competition becoming the youngest artists to accomplish this. Their performance, as well as  other videos of student performances are available at kilianpianostudio.com under "Past Students."

He has served on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Vancouver Island University and is currently a member of Brentwood College School's music faculty.
